Silo Fumigation Services

Silo Fumigation and Cleaning Services
At The Bristol Pest Controller, we have been providing fumigation services and solutions for over two decades. Based in the South West of the UK, we operate locally and nationally for a variety of clients and business who depend on silo storage.
Silos are designed to store hundreds or thousands of tonnes of food products for prolonged periods of time with the right temperature and humidity, which makes them prime targets for Insects and pests that can quickly find their way in and contaminate your produce.
If left untreated, it can and will quickly spoil the stock within the silo within a very short space of time. The primary solution for a contaminated silo is fumigation with use of phosphine gas which requires a licensed and experienced team to deploy safely. This is where we at The Bristol Pest Controller come in.

Our Silo Fumigation process

Inspection and sealing
Before the silo or silos are fumigated, it’s important that it’s thoroughly examined for any leaks, cracks or damage. This is due to the increasing incidence of insects and pests becoming immune to phosphine gas. This occurs in situations where the pests are exposed to small, non-lethal doses of the gas. Which, in turn, allows them to lay eggs and produce offspring that are increasingly immune. In order for our gas fumigation solution to be successful, it’s very important that the silo is secured and sealed.

Fumigation
Once the Silo has been sealed we can apply the fumigant, which in this instance is phosphine gas. We apply sufficient concentrations to achieve a complete kill of all insects at all life stages, including eggs. The fumigation process requires a specific exposure time to ensure the targeted pests are adequately controlled. The duration can vary depending on factors such as the target pests, temperature, and the type of product being fumigated.

Venting and Aeration
When fumigation is complete, we will force air through the silo to remove the phosphine. It is important that the silo us properly aerated to remove any residual gas. Aeration is necessary to ensure that the commodity is safe for consumption or further processing and meets the regulatory standards for residual phosphine levels.
If your silo has an “open top” or is a bolted steel silo, it may be necessary to seal the silos manually with our own equipment before fumigation begins. This is because typically these types of silos aren’t manufactured to be gas-tight. If you’re unsure, contact us and we will be glad to help. We will be sure to include all potential costs when we evaluate your site.

What are the benefits of Silo Fumigation?
Pest contamination is responsible for a massive amount of waste from silos with agricultural products. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations stated that almost one-third of the world’s production is lost or wasted each year, largely from untreated silos. A silo fumigation solution from The Bristol Pest Controller can help save you and your business from wastage and the costs associated with it. Our silo fumigation specialists are able to treat massive quantities of products such as grain in one treatment. Making a very cost-effective solution to your pest control requirements.
- No wasted transport costs
- You won’t have damage to the grain or product
- Your grain to remain where it is to be fumigated
- No downgraded prices
- Increase the longevity of the stored product
Silos offer economies of scale for grain storage, and those same economies apply when arranging fumigation before grain leaves the silo. A major benefit offered by silo fumigation is that all of the grain can be fumigated simultaneously. The alternative, if fumigation is delayed, is arranging separate shipping or container-based fumigation treatments. We can assist with your Silo fumigation no matter the stage or complexity of the project.
Experienced, expert, and safe
Phosphine gas is extremely effective in a silo, and eradicates a very wide range of pests however it requires a licensed professional in order to use effectively and safely.
