So you’ve just moved into your dream home, for a short period of time and everything seems wonderful and great, but what’s this? There seems to be something wriggling around in my carpet!
You’re thinking your carpets have only recently been infested with Moths but it is more than likely that the Moths have been around for sometime, the adult Moth will lay her eggs close to the food source potentially resulting in serious damage to carpets and clothing once they have hatched into their larvae stage.
These fascinating insect pest species are simply just following the course of nature that hands them.
Common Clothes Moths, Carpet Moths and Case bearing Moths all have one thing in common, they’re all moderately common pests of animal derived fabrics, furs and feather products.
At The Bristol Pest Controller, we’ve got over two decades of experience in the removal of moth infestations from people’s homes. Contact our Bristol moth removal team here for friendly advice, a call out or general queries.
Do I need to treat my carpets for Moth damage?
Yes most likely, good hygiene is essential when getting rid of a Moth infestation in the home, we always advise thorough vacuuming of the carpets and floor spaces prior to any Moth treatment about to commence.
Although it is important to know that once you have a professional treatment carried out you should always refrain from doing any vacuuming for at least 2 weeks.
The reason for this is because Moths are amazing insects which like to recycle natural fibres back into the food chain, they also follow a complete insect life cycle meaning there are several other stages of the insect involved such as the eggs, larvae and pupae.
The Moth larvae will spin silken cocoons to form camouflaged tunnels often incorporating part of the food material before emerging for a meal on the carpet or clothes.

Where will I find Carpet Moth and larvae in my home?
Textiles moths like to live in dark and undisturbed areas such as cupboards underneath stair cases which is full of stuff, Moths don’t like houses that are cleaned frequently removing dust and debris.
The adult Moth doesn’t do any damage to fibres in the carpets or clothes it’s the larvae which eats the Keratin which is the natural protein found in animal hair.
Interestingly we find Moth damage commonly underneath heavy furniture like book cases, wardrobes and side tables, in most cases we would usually advise the home owner to clear the floor space as much as possible and pull away the heavy furniture from the edges of the walls, sometimes there is enough space underneath furniture to access for the treatment without moving it out.
How can I prepare for a Moth treatment?
Thoroughly clean, vacuum or sweep your premises- empty the vacuum outside in a sealed bag.
Empty storage units and wardrobes if they are infested- Wash clothes on a 60°C wash or above before putting them back in the room after treatment.

Wash all bedding, including duvets on a hot wash 60°C or above.
Remove electrical items and personal items from the floor space.
Consider throwing away any heavily infested clothing or upholstery/carpets.
Heavy furniture may need to be moved to check under them for signs of infestation, if you feel you would need two men to carry out this task please inform The Bristol Pest Controller.
Cover or properly store all exposed foodstuffs (if we are spraying the kitchen we would suggest removing all food to prevent contamination).
Ensure that all pets (cats, dogs, birds, etc) are removed. Do not allow them back in the room for 4 hours.
Remove fish tanks (if this is not possible then they must be covered with a chemical resistant impermeable fabric).
