The Bristol Pest Controller has recently signed up all its pest control Bristol technicians to the brand new BPCA registered pest control scheme which is due to be launched this month! Not only do the technicians get snazzy little ID cards to carry around with themselves to show the customer at the beginning of a rat or mouse job it also gives the customer peace of mind they have hired a fully compliant, all singing and all dancing technician.

Personal development
This also means that the individual technician has to acquire 20 CPD (continuous professional development) points per year. There’s 3 different levels of the BPCA registered scheme: affiliate, trainee and technician. To become a full registered technician you must have passed the Level 2 Award in Pest Management.
In order for the pest control technician to gain their 20 CPD points by the end of the year they can do this by carrying out additional training courses or workshops like bird management, bed bug control, insect identification, food safety, first aid in the work place, attend events or seminars like PestEx or regional forum meetings organised by the BPCA.
Keeping up-to-date with the latest learnings
All of our technicians also keep up to date with pest control news in the industry by reading a number of publications like PPC magazine or PEST magazine. These are packed full of industry news, best practice features and practical advice for technicians. PPC Magazine is available to anyone registered on the free Affiliate Scheme, and each issue includes a CPD quiz, which once completed, will be added to their BPCA Registered CPD record.
The Bristol Pest Controller is now a team of 6 technicians who are all fully ‘registered technicians’. They’re all qualified to carry out pesticide and trapping treatments for fleas, rats, cockroaches, wasps and many more. Not only that, they have a full understanding and experience in commercial pest control too, we provide numerous services for commercial contracts in the Bristol area ranging from rodent control to electronic fly killers.
We also have 3 technicians who are ‘advanced technicians’ their advanced qualifications will be listed on the back of their ID cards. These range from: Advanced technician in Pest Management to the Safe use of Fumigants for Invertebrate Pests. We were attracted to the new BPCA registered scheme as it differs considerably to other CPD schemes in the industry. For instance it introduces ‘unstructured learning’. This means that if a technician has learned something new, perhaps through watching a colleague carry out a specialist work activity or a technical discussion this learning will be seen as CPD. The technician can add these CPD points after reflecting through a few questions online such as: What have I done? What have I learned? How will this enable me to do my job better?
