Carpet Beetles, what are they exactly?
Carpet Beetles have a nick name (Woolly Bears) and it is in their larval stages when they cause the most damage to carpets and other upholstery. The larvae are 4-5mm in length and has brown stripes with many fine prickly hairs covering it’s body.
They have these fine hairs to irritate any attacking predators such as Wasps which attempt to harm them. The larvae will hatch from their eggs in spring and early summer. Although the entire lifecycle of Variegated Carpet Beetle is 1-3 years depending on temperature and climate the adults will only live for 2 weeks!
Where do Variegated Beetles come from?
The adult beetle emerges from May to August and will fly to mate and search for food where she will lay their eggs. She will lay her eggs close to the food source best for her larvae to survive.
The beetle itself will eat pollen from flowers found in gardens. Her larvae have a very different diet which consists of natural fibres such as: feathers, fur, hair and wool. She will look to lay her eggs in places like old bird nests, fabrics and an accumulation of fluff. Carpet beetle come from outside, their food source is the pollen on flowers which is outside. Similar looking to the lady bird they will similarly enter buildings in small cracks and crevices. You will find them gaining access around window and door frames. They will also gain access through very small cracks in search of a home or food. Other places they will gain access into your property could be hitching a lift on a bunch of flowers. Openings in walls from plumbing and electrical utility supplies, soffits, ducting, roof voids and chimney breasts.
What do they eat? Once the beetle is inside the property there are many household items which it will attack and eat. You are likely to find damage caused to wool rugs, oriental rugs and woollen clothing. They will attack stuffed animals fur and dried flowers and get caught in the cavity walls and loft spaces of buildings. They are common problem in heritage centers and museums
