Drain survey for rats in Bristol
The population of rats is on the increase just like the human population of Bristol is growing too. More people means more rats in the sewers of Bristol! This is the reason that we always check the drains. By lifting the manhole covers when we are carrying out a pest control inspection. So we can find out if the rats are originating from the drains.

You won’t find mice in drains
Did you know that mice tend to spend 75% of their time in roof voids or cavity walls?
Mice are most commonly found migrating across and down into a property – quite the opposite to the rat species’ behaviour which usually initiates from the ground and travels upwards. Rats are partial to living in wet and dark climates, making the sewers in Bristol the perfect modern home. As pests, they carry many diseases which can be transmitted to humans through the contamination of water or food. This is why it’s so important to call a professional pest control technician immediately. They will start you on a baiting program to remove and eliminate the rat infestation before it grows.
Getting a drain survey in addition to your rat treatment
Having spent the money getting rid of rats with my pest controller why should I also get a drain survey for rats?
You’ve had the treatment for the rats, and they went away with the use of poisons and traps. But, we suspect they’re back because they’ve found their way in through your drainage system. We often find that in houses where there has been some additional construction or developed to the property. Where old sewer lines were not capped off or sealed. Or an old manhole may have been left abandoned which could be hidden and buried below the floor.
When we undertake a drain survey, we’re able to look down into the manhole. And we can identify very clear signs of rat presence or activity such as rat droppings, grease marks or broken pieces of the manhole cover.
CCTV drain survey for rats
At this point, we’d recommend a camera survey to inspect further up the line for any breaks or displaced joints in the pipe. We would also take time to carefully look for any uncapped disused old pipes that might branch off below the house providing immediate access for the rats.
What you get from a drain survey from The Bristol Pest Controller
Our services differ from other camera surveying services out there as we are primarily focused upon looking for rat holes in the pipes as opposed to simply reporting to you the colour and make of your sewer system as with other companies. Our ultimate goal is to find the source of the rat infestation and identify their entry to your property. Whilst giving you peace of mind that our little friends will not return again.
Following your survey, we’ll provide you with a full report and CCTV recording of our findings, with recommendation of what to do next.

Solving problems with rats in your drains
The best way and most ethical way to keep rats out of your drains are to instal a high-quality non-return valve. This will stop rats and other rodents passing through your drains towards your home whilst allowing them to pass freely downstream. At the Bristol Pest Controller, we’re experts in the installation of these, which has become a very popular method of rat control in Bristol.
